Fire hits Stroudsburg apartment, 1 dead

STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say one person is dead after a fire broke out at a Stroudsburg apartment complex that is home to many senior citizens.

Police say the fire started in a fifth-floor apartment in the Westgate Apartments around 8:45 p.m. Thursday and was mostly contained to that part of the building.Residents were quickly evacuated, but Stroud Area Regional Police say one person is dead.Firefighters had to carry some residents down from upper floors because they were in wheelchairs or weren't able to walk down the stairs.More than 100 people live in the building.Authorities say residents have been evacuated to the a nearby high school gymnasium.
