McClafferty, Stoner win 20th Annual Truskey Memorial 5K

Ideal conditions greeted a large field of runners for Saturday morning's 20th annual edition of the Truskey Memorial 5K Run and Walk and 10 K Run, held at Tuscarora State Park.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures helped attract a total of 413 participants. That included 348 runners for the 5K race, which is held on the same course as the Schuylkill League Cross Country Championships. The Truskey 5K serves as a preseason workout for Schuylkill runners for that reason. The races aren't limited to local runners, however. Nathan McClafferty, a senior at Conrad Weiser High School in Robesonia, which competed under the banner of Keystone Track Club, was the 5K overall winner with a time of 16 minutes, 30 seconds, four seconds ahead of North Schuylkill High School sophomore Brendan Shearn."We've been running this race for four years, since I was a freshman," said McClafferty, a PIAA State Cross Country qualifier last season who placed fifth in the 3,200 meters at the State Track Meet. "The course is hilly, and it's a good mix of how high school races are. We really enjoy it, and it's nice to have some competition to start the season."In the girls 5K, Pottsville High freshman Paige Stoner was the winner, with a time of 18:40. Tamaqua junior Amber Carroll was second at 19:45."This was my first high school race," said Stoner. "I won junior high races last year, but I wasn't expecting a time like that today."The 10 K races were captured by a pair of former Schuylkill scholastic standouts.Mike Carriglitto of Pottstown, who ran scholastically for Blue Mountain and is a frequent member of the Truskey Run winners' circle, crossed the finish line in 38:44. Marian coach Jeremy Dormer was second at 43:52.On the female side, former Nativity High State hurdle champion Samantha Snukis of St. Clair was the winner, placing fourth overall at 49:76. Tracy Yutko of Tamaqua placed second at 51 minutes. The top 5K walkers were Tom Lager of Jim Thorpe and Pamela Ohl of Tamaqua. The event is sponsored by Wayne and Pat Truskey through the Tamaqua Runners Club in memory of the Truskeys' sons, Christopher and Kevin, both former Tamaqua High runners who were killed in separate auto accidents. Proceeds raised from the races benefit the Truskey Scholarship Fund, which provides collegiate scholarships for the top senior scholastic runners in the event."Kevin was a rival of mine in high school, but he ended up being a very good friend," said Carriglitto. "I'm close to the Truskeys and as long as I'm able to get here, I'll be here and running."Truskey Memorial Run5K ResultsOverall - Male: 1. Nathan McClafferty (Keystone Track Club) 16:30. Female: 1.
