Remembering old friends

Dear Editor:

Tis the season for remembering old friends as I am referring to Ralph and Daniel Cipko, who were born and raised in Panther Valley.Ralph and Daniel Cipko were wealthy philanthropists who had a coal miner's heart for the Valley. They were motivated by recognition or should I say Daniel liked his picture in the paper. They both recently passed away leaving their generosity to the towns.Every time I pass Kennedy Park in Lansford I think of the day we brought in the gazebo with their financial help, also other local businessmen helped in setting down the foundation for this beautiful structure. Daniel was very picky in choosing the design, making sure it had the perfect top.As the first president of the Lansford Improvement Committee 1991, along with Vice President Rose Reed, Secretary Jeanette Coury and Treasurer Irm Leibensperger. We all shared fun and good memories with the Cipko's.When I see the angel lights going up, I think of the brothers. When I'm in Jim Thorpe and we all hear the awesome sound of the chimes coming from the Court House clock, I think of the brothers. When passing the No. 9 Lansford Coal Museum, we thing of their unselfish giving. Also begin the last president of LIC 2001, Vice President Irm Leibensperger, Secretary Pat Haughton, Treasurer Bob Silver, also Matt Dunn, our ever faithful tree service volunteer, it is like opening up an old photo album and finding warmth and pride in all our accomplishments.Through my own personal losses, I realize it's not in what you have today, but in what you leave behind for tomorrow.Danny would be jumping for joy and Ralph very much touched by knowing their pictures were in the paper one last time, although their gifts will last forever.Sincerely, your friendDiane LeonziPast president of LIC
