Area woman celebrates 96 years

Blanche Esther (Brooks) Garrett, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly celebrated her 90th birthday on Nov. 26.

Born in Nesquehoning in 1920, Blanche also resided in Lansford, Jim Thorpe, Lake Harmony and New Jersey.A graduate of Summit Hill High School, Blanche worked in the Windsor Department Store in Lehighton and Brights Department Store, and she managed the coffee and Italian shop at Split Rock Lodge.She was married to Russell Warran Garrett for 14 years until his passing in 1996.She is the proud mother of seven children and grandmother of seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.Blanche has spent most of her life in casts, braces, and wheelchairs. Because of many operations and therapies she overcame the doctors' diagnoses that she would never walk again.Her hobbies are reading, shopping, quilting, embroidery, cooking, and baking. She belonged to the bowling club in Summit Hill, she managed her own chorus, and played piano for the church auxiliary in Summit Hill.Blanche is a member of Summit Hill Methodist Church. She has traveled extensively throughout the continental United States.
