Appears under influence; jailed

A Lehighton man appeared in Carbon County court on Monday afternoon for sentencing on criminal charges, but was not sentenced but sent to prison for being under the influence of alcohol.

Joseph John Kulp III, 40, was scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass on four counts of indecent assault and two counts of harassment, as summary offenses, but instead was found in contempt of court by the judge.Kulp admitted drinking in the morning prior to court. A member of the adult probation department gave him a portable breath test and it revealed he had a .135BAC.Serfass remanded Kulp to the custody of the sheriff's department and ordered him held in the county prison until 1:15 p.m. today when he will appear before Serfass for sentencing.Kulp had been found guilty by a jury of the charges on March 7 following a two-day trial. He was charged by Lehighton police with grabbing the behind of a then 14-year-old girl on two separate occasions.
