Lansford council discusses sidewalk issue near stadium

The Panther Valley School District will either have to replace a sidewalk along its new parking lot at the football stadium, or seek a waiver through a zoning board hearing.

Lansford borough council on Thursday denied the district's request to be permitted to do without the sidewalk at the parking lot on West Bertsch Street. The district demolished a dilapidated industrial building in July 2011, then paved over the lot to be used for parking at football games. The work also removed the sidewalk.Councilman Tommy Vadyak said there is a lot of foot traffic on West Bertsch because people walk from town to the public swimming pool, and the drug and grocery stores adjacent to the stadium. He said the barricades the district has put up at the site are forcing people to walk in the street."I think the district should be forced to put in a sidewalk," he said.Vadyak, along with council members Mary Kruczek, Danielle Smith, Lenny Kovatch and president Rose Mary Cannon voted against the district's request. In other matters Thursday, council agreed to meet this coming Wednesday to discuss applications from companies vying to perform zoning work for the borough.
