Bears get bronze

ALLENTOWN Pleasant Valley coach Mark Allison saw some familiar faces taking part in the consolation match of the District 11 Class AAA Doubles Tennis Tournamant.

The veteran Bears' mentor was glad to see his top doubles team of Vince Voulo and Jon White in action especially knowing a bronze medal was on the line. But their opponents were also familiar to Allison. The Bears' duo was facing the same Allen doubles' team that knocked off Pleasant Valley's Lou Bravo and Kyle Tamarez in the opening round of the tournament.Voulo and White not only avenged the opening round loss for their teammates, but in the process earned District 11 medals. The 7-5, 6-3 victory over the Canaries' Patrick Minnig and Adam Schultz at Westend Racquetball Swin and Fitness Club gave Voulo and White a third place finish."It was really huge for them to be one of the top doubles teams in the entire district," Allison said. "It's quite an accomplishment."It goes beyond just our team. It's our conference and everything. We're representing everybody there and they should take a lot of pride in winning."A few days ago, Allison watched his seniors Bravo and Tamarez fall out after an opening round 6-4, 7-5 setback to Minnig and Schultz. But, with being able to see some of that match, Allison shared some strategy with Voulo and White this time around. Allison said there was some strategy exchanged between the Bears' teammates as well about that earlier match."I know they (Bravo and Tamarez) talked to them some," Allison said. "But, I saw that match myself so I was able to give some input myself. I talked to them a bit about the players they were playing, so I think we had a little bit of an edge having actually seeing them play ahead of time."But you still have to go out and play hard. They're a good team and you still have to play well in order to beat them and we did. I was really happy with the way it ended."This was the first time since 2007 that a Bears' doubles team advanced to the "final four" of districts. That year, Jarrett Siwiec and Matt Cisluycis represented Pleasant Valley in the tournament."I'm happy for Vince - being a senior - that he walked away with a district medal," Allison said. "That's a big accomplishment for him. I mean he has done well in our league play and league tournament, but this is his first district medal."For a freshman to win a district medal though is pretty rare. So, that's a great accomplishment for John. The time here has been a great experience for him to take with him for the next three years with singles and doubles play."
