The Jim Thorpe Lions Club, in cooperation with the Jim Thorpe Borough Council, has just announced that it is launching a new community service project for the Jim Thorpe area.

The idea for the project was born when Jim Thorpe Borough Public Service Supervisor Jim Trainer said some of the American flags on utility poles throughout the borough needed to be replaced.Through their "Community Flag Project," the Lions Club is taking on the responsibility of supplying and replacing American flags throughout Jim Thorpe.They thought that this would be a good project for the community to get involved with so they are looking to solicit funds from area residents just as they have done for past community projects.With that goal in mind, the Jim Thorpe Lions Club will be mailing a flyer out to community residents next week seeking contributions.Ronald J. Sheehan, Chairman of the Town Flag Committee, noted that "we've already spent about $2,500 on flags.""Any monies raised will be segregated and put off to the side so that we can expand the number of flags in town and also replace them as they deteriorate."The Lions Club noted that contributions in any amount will be greatly appreciated."We think its a worthwhile project as it will save the cost burden to the borough to provide flags for the community," Sheehan said.The flags acquired by the Jim Thorpe Lions Club through the Community Flag Project will be turned over to the Borough of Jim Thorpe.The borough council and the borough work force will then take care of seeing that they go up and come back down as needed.The Lions Club will continue to oversee the proper retirement of the worn out flags.
