Apology needed

Dear Editor,

Upon reading Ms. Andrade's article on June 3, I was shocked by several statements made by Slatington Councilman Melvin Gildner. Mr. Gildner stated that Mayor Walter Niedermeyer and Borough Secretary Karen Gill were "untruthful" in their testimony. In addition, he said that Gill was pressured to be dishonest, and that the mayor has a history of "not telling the truth." It should be noted that Gill's and Niedermeyer's testimony confirmed statements made by councilman Bryon Reed.Gildner should understand that lying under oath is a serious crime that can result in charges of perjury. He is stating that Gill and Mayor Niedermeyer lied to the court. This is a serious accusation which impugns the reputation of these public servants. This unfounded allegation is an insult to the good name and integrity of the named parties.Gill is a longtime employee whose honesty and integrity have never been questioned. The honorable Mayor Niedermeyer has faithfully served the people of Slatington for 16 years. At 7 p.m. June 12, (the regular borough council meeting), Gildner needs to publicly apologize to all parties, and issue a retraction. His statements are an insult to those involved, the judicial process and the citizens of Slatington.Daniel StevensResident of Slatington
