Pedestrian killed crossing Rt. 61

St. Clair police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident which occurred just before midnight Tuesday. According to borough police Charles Levan, 26, of St. Clair, was attempting to cross SR61 at the intersection with Ann street. Police at the scene did not know which direction Levan may have been attempting to cross when struck by a sport utility vehicle which was traveling south. Levan was struck in the intersection possibly within a crosswalk. Reports from the scene say passersby attempted CPR on Levan who was later pronounced dead at the scene by a Schuylkill County deputy coroner. One of Levan's shoes was found lying near the crosswalk. The impact with Levan caused serious damage to the vehicle. No one in the vehicle was injured. Unconfirmed reports indicate Levan was walking home from work. The southbound lanes of the road were closed for several hours. Borough police, who were assisted at the scene by state police, did not say if any charges would be filed against the driver, whose name was not immediately released.
