Heavy rain and hail fell throughout certain parts of our area last night causing minor damage to some vehicles and dangerous conditions on the roads. Hail is possible with most thunderstorms as it is produced by cumulonimbi, or thunderclouds, usually at the leading edge of a severe storm system. Hail formation requires environments of strong, upward motion of air with the parent thunderstorm (similar to tornadoes) and lowered heights of the freezing level. It was 47 in Tamaqua degrees when the hail came down. Pictured is an accumulation of inch hail found alongside SR-309 at the entrance to Owl Creek Road in South Tamaqua.
