Lazar

Courtney Lazar a student at Panther Valley High School was selected to represent the school at the Hugh O'Brien Youth Scholarship Conference. The conference will be held at Millersville University from May 20-23. She is an honor roll student and very active in the school's JROTC and band programs. She is the daughter of Mark and Helene Lazar, 227 North Chestnut Street, Summit Hill.

Zachary Dean Smith, a 2006 graduate of Palmerton Area High School and the son of Scott and Tracy Smith of Palmerton, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Zack earned a 3.5 GPA and is majoring in park and recreation management with an emphasis in outdoor leadership.

Guy Bowe, a Tamaqua Area High School graduate, was inducted into the International Honor Society Beta Gamma Sigma. The society is accredited by AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)

Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB. Criteria for membership requires student to be in the top 10 percent of his or her class.

Petro

Angela Petro, daughter of John and Ann Marie Petro of Tamaqua, has been named to the Dean's List for the Winter quarter at Drexel University, Philadelphia. A 2005 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, Petro earned a 4.0 grade point average, majoring in Political Science with a minor in History. While at drexel, she has been active in the Pennoni Honors College, Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority, Order of Omega Greek Honor Society, Kappa Theta Upsilon Co-Op Honors Society and the Drexel College Republicans.

The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Allyson Kusko from Nesquehoning has been named an All-American Scholar.

The USAA has established the All-American Scholar Award Program to offer deserved recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor, or other qualified sponsor are accepted.

Allyson, who attends the Panther Valley Middle School is in the seventh grade, was nominated for this honor by Charles DePuy.

Army National Guard Pvt. Donald F. Fernandes has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Knox, Ky., which included basic combat training and advanced individual training (AIT).

During the first nine weeks of initial entry training (IET), the trainee completed basic combat training which included instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, marches, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions, and core values.

Kuhla

Silberline Manufacturing Co., Inc., the global supplier of effect pigments with its Corporate Headquarters in Tamaqua, is announced that Jason Kuhla was recently promoted to the position of Global Automotive Product Development Chemist at the Company's Tidewood Industrial Park facility, Tamaqua, PA.

Jason joined Silberline in October 1999, with his most recent position being a Global Automotive Product Development Technician in the Tidewood facility.

Drew Bonner

Drew Bonner, a senior band member at Tamaqua Area High School, has been selected, after intense and extensive auditioning to perform with the 2010 Pennsylvania All-State Band later this month.

The All-State Band is under the guest baton of Stephen Bolstad, director of bands at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The performance will be held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association annual In-Service Conference held in Pittsburgh, Pa.
