Brendan McGowan, son of Michele Martz of Hazleton and Tim and Donna McGowan of Barnesville, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Temple University in Philadelphia. A 2012 graduate of Marian Catholic High School, he is a member of the Temple Owls football team.

Eric M. Mason has been named to the dean's list at University of Maryland Eastern Shore for the fall 2013 semester.

Eric is a freshman PGA Golf Management major.

A 2013 graduate of Marian Catholic High School, Eric is the son of Rick and Jayne Mason of Jim Thorpe and the grandson of Bill and Nancy Mason of Jim Thorpe and Jane Eckert of Columbus, Ohio.

Four local students were named to Susquehanna University's dean's list for the fall 2013 semester.

The dean's list recognizes students who achieve a grade point average of 3.4 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for the semester. To qualify, students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours.

Sarah Paluck, of Lake Hauto/Tamaqua, is a sophomore graphic design major. She is a 2012 graduate of Tamaqua High School and the daughter of Joseph and Lyn Paluck.

Laura R. McGavin, daughter of Jo Ann and Lenny McGavin of Jim Thorpe, graduated from the University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Ky., in December with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. She was also named to the dean's list for the fall 2013 semester.

She is a 2009 graduate of Carbon Career & Technical Institute, where she was class salutatorian. She attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

Laura is the granddaughter of Marilyn and Edgar A. Poe Jr. of Jim Thorpe.

Lindsey Joy Seltzer of Franklin Township graduated from the St. Luke's School of Nursing program on Dec. 12, 2013, held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Allentown.

She attended the Student Nurses Association conference in North Carolina, serving as president for her chapter. She also received the Sandy Caruso Leadership Scholarship award given to a graduate who demonstrates leadership abilities and management potential.

Lindsey is the daughter of Keith and Diane Seltzer of Franklin Township, and the granddaughter of William Seltzer.

Eric R. Swankoski, son of Ray and Patty Swankoski, Coaldale, and grandson of Peggy and the late Joseph Rebarchak Hollywood and Irene and the late Raymond Swankoski Hazleton, has been named to the dean's list for the fall 2013 semester with a 3.68 grade point average at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, N.J.

A 2013 graduate of Marian Catholic High School, Eric is majoring in Hotel and Hospitality Management and is a member of the Fairleigh Dickinson University Football and Golf team.

Coast Guard Seaman Karli I. Thomas graduated from the United States Coast Guard Training Center at Cape May, N.J. on Aug. 9. She is the daughter of Jeff and Renee Thomas of Jim Thorpe. She is a 2006 graduate of Marian Catholic High School.

She is third generation Coast Guard having followed in the footsteps of her grandfather, Cletus W. Milan and her uncle, Cletus A. Milan who is currently serving in the USCG.

Laura Walser, of Tamaqua,was among 24 members of the Susquehanna University community who participated in the university's SU CASA (Susquehanna University Central America Service Adventure) annual service-learning trip.

The trip took place from Dec. 29 to Jan. 12.

Program participants contributed in various ways to the communities they visited.

While staying in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, they were divided into three teams: vacation Bible school, construction and medical.
