Band festival

The 15th Annual Land of the Running Water Marching Band Adjudication, hosted by the Tamaqua Area Raider Marching Band, will be held Sept. 24 at the Tamaqua High School Sports Stadium. This year's event will feature a dozen participating local high school marching bands; including Bangor, Emmaus, Exeter Township, Hamburg, Mahanoy Area, Minersville, Panther Valley, Pottsville Area, Southern Lehigh, Tri Valley, Williams Valley and Wilson.

Gates will open at 5 p.m.and the competition will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Board of Health

The September meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the municipal building with Randolph Gormley, James Gormley, Earl Boettger, Shirley Becker, Health Officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Sept. 8 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 75 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session.

Rose Valle provided the invocation, entitled "The Sun is Always Shining." Vice President Doris Brobst and secretary Joan Ann Garber provided their reports.

Jean Yanick was added to the sick list and updates were provided on the health of Carol Sedlock and Dolores Boyle

Community Fair

New Life Assembly of God Church will sponsor a free Community Fair this Saturday, from 4-7 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center. The center is located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart, next to Willing Park.

Free activities will include a bounce house, face painting, balloon animals, a dunk tank and games for kids. Free refreshments will include hot dogs and cotton candy.

TEPTO

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization, which provides support for students in the Tamaqua and Rush Elementary Schools, will meet at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 12, in the Tamaqua Elementary School Library.

Topics for discussion will include activities for the 2011-2012 school year, including school projects, field trips, fundraisers and more.

Open house sessions have been scheduled for both schools.

At Tamaqua Elementary, open house will be held Sept. 21 in two sessions: grades 2 and 3 from 6-7:30 p.m.; grades 4 and 5 from 7:30-9 p.m.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Sept. 1 at the Tamaqua Community Center. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and offered an inspirational reading.

Rose Valle provided the invocation, entitled "Offer Up A Prayer." Vice President Doris Brobst, Treasurer Dolores Walck and Secretary Joan Ann Garber provided their reports. Refreshments included hot dogs, snacks and beverages.

An election of officers will be held in September. Nominations for positions will be accepted at the Sept. 8 meeting.

9/11 service

The annual Tamaqua Area 9/11 Remembrance Service will be held Sept. 11 at the Hometown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on SR54 in Hometown. The event will begin at 2 p.m. Richard Hadesty will again serve as master of ceremonies and guest speakers include many local dignitaries and military veterans.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America. The service will be sponsored by the South Ward Playground Association, as it has every year.

The public is welcome to attend.

Adult Day Care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for September, including the monthly birthday celebration on Sept. 19.

Other activities for the month will include: Sept. 6, craft day; Sept. 7, bingo; Sept. 13, musical entertainment with Audrey Christ; Sept. 14, visit with Skye the dog; Sept. 21, Salvation Army service; and Sept. 27, cooking class.

In addition to weekly sing-a-longs, exercise sessions, a variety of therapies and social games, the center provides for hairstyling and manicure service.

The Tamaqua Seniors met Aug. 25 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 86 members in attendance. One guest, Gladys Neff, was welcomed.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and offered an inspirational reading. Rose Valle provided the invocation, entitled "Laugh at the Clouds." Vice President Doris Brobst and Secretary Joan Ann Garber provided their reports. An election of officers will be held in September.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Aug. 23 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 42 members in attendance.

President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting.

Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker.

A discussion was held on an Oct. 4 trip to Penn's Peak and the group voted to hold the 2012 picnic at St. Peter's Church Pavilion.

Guest speaker Judy Radzwick gave a presentation on Diakon Volunteer Home Care.
