ESRC volleyball

The Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission will sponsor a Summer Volleyball League for adults 18 and older. Registrations are now being accepted.

Contests will be held at the sand volleyball court at the Black Diamond Park, Coaldale.

The league is co-ed and teams may have between six and 10 players. Games are scheduled to begin June 14 and will then be held Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer months.

Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met May 9 at the home of Sue Hummel.

Plans for the final fundraiser of the year were discussed and finalized. A used clothing drive will be held June 2 at the American Hose Fire Company. Items, such as clothing and shoes, may be dropped off between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon that day. The installation of officers for 2012-2013 will be held on June 6.

ARC Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Tamaqua on Wednesday, May 23, at St. John United Church of Christ. Hours will be from 1-6 p.m.

Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good general health is eligible to donate blood. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767). Walk-ins are welcome.

This visit is being sponsored by Nova Marie's Thrift Shop of Tamaqua.

The church is located at Pine and Biddle streets (SR309).

Fitness day

Seven Tamaqua Area High School students have organized a community-wide Fit Day for this Saturday at the Tamaqua Elementary School. Activities will be held from noon until 6 p.m. and will include a community walk, various physical activities, informational kiosks, free health screenings, exercise demonstrations and competitions for all ages. There will also be musical entertainment.

Students involved in the project include Martin Sedlock, Shane Mulligan, Joseph Franko, Brandon Fogel, Troy Reinhardt, David Frederickson and Dylan Houser.

Film festival

The Tamaqua Area High School Media Club is sponsoring the Seventh Annual TAHS Independent Film Festival and Art Show, scheduled to be held this Friday. Hosts for the event will include Andrea Whitley, Allie Miller, Keith Kranch and Chris Hartung. Formal wear is encouraged as the students are hoping for a "film premier vibe."

Doors to the district's auditorium, located between the senior high and middle schools, will open at 6:30 p.m.

Lewistown Valley Garden Club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual tea April 26 in the social hall of Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. More than 40 members and guests were in attendance.

A short business session was conducted by President June Leiby and Vice President Kathy McGee.

Members were reminded of the dates for the 2012 Schuylkill County Fair with entry information due to be available by mid May.

Board of health

The Tamaqua Board of Health held its May meeting with Earl Boettger, James Gormley, Shirley Becker and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.

Barron reported making five spot check inspections: M and I deli, American Legion Post 173, Chili Dog, Tamaqua Diner and Boyer's Food Mart.

He also received and adjusted four complaints; three concerning rubbish/trash and one for a strong cat urine odor.

There were no cases of reportable diseases for the month.

The board reminds residents of borough ordinances pertaining to dog waste.

Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority attended a Founder's Day Dinner on April 25 at the Pottsville Club. Also attending the dinner were sorority chapters from Pottsville, Reading and Tamaqua.

Lori Schmerfeld was honored as "Girl of the Year" and perfect attendance awards were presented. Donna Gerber was presented the Program of the Year Award for her Mardi Gras-themed meeting.

The next regular meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., May 9, at the home of Sue Hummel

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met April 26 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 80 members in attendance. Two new members, Evelyn Bass and Mike Trubilla were welcomed.

Vice President Nancy Gerber conducted the business session and provided her weekly report. Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Thanksgiving." Secretary Joan Anne Garber provided her report. Vern Balliet and Jane Tartar were added to the sick list.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing to celebrate the sixth year of its popular free Summer Concert Series. The concerts are held on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season.
