Community clean up

The annual Fall Schuylkill Keep It Pretty Clean Up Campaign will be held this Saturday throughout the county. In Tamaqua, two groups will be sponsoring the clean up campaign, the Tamaqua Beautification Association and the South Ward Neighborhood Committee.

The Beautification Association will meet at the M and T Bank parking lot, Broad and Center streets, at 8:30 a.m. The group will concentrate its efforts in the Broad, Center, Railroad and Mauch Chunk Streets area.

Healing ministry is slated

A bereavement group at St. Francis of Assisi in Nesquehoning is forming for anyone struggling with the grief process in the loss of a loved one, regardless if the loss is recent or happened a long time ago.

The Fall Session Bereavement Group will begin Monday, Oct. 11, and will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. each Monday for a period of six to eight weeks. The group will meet in the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Hall, Mill Street, Nesquehoning.

The next meeting of the Panther Valley Band Boosters will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17, at the Panther Valley High School band room.

Summit Hill

Methodist Charge

The schedule for the Coaldale/Summit Hill United Methodist Charge for Sunday, Sept. 19, is as follows:

Worship services will be held at 9 a.m. in the Summit Hill United Methodist Church and at 11 a.m. in the Coaldale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Burgess Gordon, pastor, will officiate at both services.

Writers' group

The Black Diamond Writers' Network will meet Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. until noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library, 30 S. Railroad St. Guest speaker will be Loretta Mestishen, whose topic will be "The Right to Write: Voice, Authenticity and Persistence in the Craft of Writing."

The public is welcome to attend.

The BDWN is a nonprofit organization offering writing education and networking opportunities.

The group meets the third Saturday of every month.

Al-Anon adult children meetings take place on Monday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, Route 209 and Gilbert Road, Gilbert (behind the Turkey Hill). Class of 1970

Palmerton Area High School Class of 1970 will hold its class reunion on Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Lehighton American Legion, beginning at 5 p.m. Class members who did not receive a letter and reservation slip about the 40th reunion are asked to call Joanne at (610) 377-5326 or Diz at (610) 826-5145. Reservations are due by Oct. 15.

The Senior Boxes will be distributed at the Methodist Church on Friday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Free dinner

The next free community dinner will be on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 5-7 p.m. at the Methodist Church.

St. Paul Lutheran

A Service of Healing will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, during the 10:30 a.m. worship service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Summit Hill.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the church.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 72 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings. One new member, Mae McKeever, was welcomed.

Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Someone There." Reports were provided by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld and vice president Doris Brobst. Cards were received from Jean Machamer and the family of Tom Dally. The membership total has reached 117.

Missionary visitors

Kurt and Cynthia Zimmerman, career missionaries with World Gospel Mission, will be visiting Effort United Methodist Church Sept. 18-19.

Serving in Bolivia, the Zimmermans will speak and show slides at the 5 p.m. service Saturday evening and at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services on Sunday. Community residents are invited to attend any of the services.

While in Bolivia, Kurt Zimmerman has taught fifth and sixth grades and coached baseball and basketball. He serves as a youth leader, counselor, and music ministry team leader at Cristo Viene Church.
