Golden Agers

At the Sept. 13 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers, Joanne Large read a prayer remembering the 9-11 victims.

Alex Shereba displayed his two trophies that were presented to him for being the oldest member and perfect attendance for 22 years at a recent car sow.

New member May McKeever from Tamaqua was introduced and welcomed.

The next birthday celebration will be held in December for birthday celebrants in September, October, November, and December.

At the Oct. 11 meeting, a special guest will display her decorating talent.

Slatington Crime Watch

The Slatington Crime Watch will hold its community yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

The Crime Watch will be having a food stand and is in need of individually wrapped baked goods that won't melt, for it to sell. Items can be dropped off at the lot any time after 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Members of the Jim Thorpe Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8067, will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the American Legion.

Community supper

St. Mark's Episcopal Church will host a free community supper on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 4-6 p.m. at the Race Street church. The menu for this month is barbecue chicken.

St. John's

At 7 p.m. each Wednesday St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, holds an informal worship: a spiritual, peaceful evening service with Holy Communion. All are welcome to this relaxed, brief evening prayer. For those who wish to come early, a simple supper is served at 6 p.m., followed by a brief adult and children's Bible study at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call the Rev. The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization met Sept. 13, in the school library, with 54 parents in attendance. Room parents were assigned for each class. Names were included in student folders for parent information.

Anyone interested in supporting the students is welcome to become a member. The organization will be accepting memberships through Dec. 31. Tara McCarroll-Stauffenberg is in charge of the membership drive.

Fundraising packets have been distributed to all classes and are due back by Sept. 22.

The final performance of the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce Free Summer Concert Series had to be postponed last week due to weather. The event has been rescheduled for this Wednesday, Sept. 22 and will feature the Christopher Dean Band.

The concert, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the restored Tamaqua Train Station, is being sponsored by Bailey's Building Supplies.

Lion of the Month

Congratulations to Lions Charles Rush and Mary Jane Lucrezi, members of the Western Pocono Lions Club. They were named Lion of the Month by club President Lion Helen Koshensky for August.

Rush was honored for the volunteer work he did before and during the West End Fair. Lucrezi was honored for her various work, but especially for the time she gave for the club to be at the recent Senior Information Fair, which also took place at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert.

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 189 Church Road, Penn Forest Township, Jim Thorpe, will hold its first Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 23 from noon to 5 p.m. All festival proceeds will benefit Outreach Ministry to the community and beyond.

The Fall Festival will be fun for all ages. There will be games, face painting, pumpkin painting/carving, moon bounce, and a hay maze.

ELCA meeting

The Hazleton/Lehighton Cluster Women of the ELCA will gather at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sixth and North streets, Jim Thorpe for the Fall Cluster event on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 8:45 a.m. until noon.

Senior box pick up is Oct. 1 for the month of October. It is the first Friday in October because the last day of September is a Thursday.

Summit Hill

Water authority

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Water Authority will be held at the authority's pump house in White Bear, as opposed to the borough hall. The session is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.

John Michalik, president, will be in charge of the session.
