Observations

Saturday, January 10, 2015

I think if I had to pick my favorite place to go to in order to relax or enjoy the beauty of creation, it would have to be the beach; and more specifically, one very, very far away from the freezing cold we have experienced this past week.

I love the feeling of my toes in the sand and the warmth that emanates from the bottom up as well as from the sky down.

I also love the smell and the sounds of the sea itself.

Since I was a little girl, I always have enjoyed swimming in the ocean, despite the music from the movie "Jaws" looping in my mind.

Happy New Year!

I hope you all have enjoyed the holidays as much as I have.

After indulging on all of the good holiday food over the past couple of weeks no doubt many of us will be making some New Year's resolutions to exercise more and eat less in order to lose that extra fluff around our middles.

Others may resolve to spend their time or their money more wisely or to break free from some nasty habit.

I myself shy away from making any sort of resolution each year simply because I am prone to fail in keeping it.

When I was a little girl, I wrote a letter to Santa every year.

I didn't ask for much.

Sometimes I received gifts that were on my list, and sometimes I did not.

I remember one year, the only gift I woke up to was an unwrapped, fully functioning child's typewriter.

My mom was a secretary and a single mom, and that was all she could afford to get me that year.

In case you missed it, the 2014 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show aired Tuesday causing heavy breathing and heart palpitations for men across America, while causing depression and shattered self-esteem of young girls and women at the same time.

Victoria's Secret sells clothing and fragrance but is most known for its provocative lingerie and ultra-beautiful, ultrasexy and ultra-skinny models, called Angels.

Until that night, I never even knew there was a televised fashion show consisting of supermodels in their underwear and kind of wondered why there even would be.

As much as I love my day job, there are some aspects of it that I absolutely abhor.

At least once a week I end up speaking with a parent whose child has been abused, either physically, sexually or both. I have, on numerous occasions, been reduced to tears and have fought the urge to vomit over the horror stories that these desperate people share with me.

When you hear stories like that, it's really hard to go home and sleep at night.

I find myself wanting to grab some sort of weapon and take care of the pieces of garbage that hurt those innocent children myself.

For my daughters, I purchased Heathergems jewelry, which is produced from heather stems and manufactured exclusively in Pitlochry.

For myself, I brought home a couple of small bottles of Bruadar, which is a wonderful single malt Scotch whisky with honey, and for my mother-in-law, a simple box of Highland Blend tea from the Edinburgh Tea and Coffee Company.

My mother-in-law, Mary, is a serious and quite devout Tetley tea drinker.

Holiday gatherings from Thanksgiving through New Years can be wonderful and memorable occasions.

They can also be stressful and the fuel that sparks hurt feelings and family feuds.

If you are the one hosting a dinner or party, the bulk of that stress will, by default, land on your lap. While there are things you can do to help reduce that stress, your guests can and should do their part to help things run smoothly.

I just love autumn.

There are several things for all of us to appreciate and look forward to in the three months leading up to December:

The kids go back to school.

The leaves change colors and provide a daily, brilliant display that begs you to simply stop and take notice.

Football season.

Hunting season, and the observance of three major holidays during that time period: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

As wonderful as all of that is, an even bigger celebration occurs for an entire month No-Shave November!

And so it begins.

The Christmas decorations are already displayed for sale in the store aisles, special pre-Black Friday sales ads are streaming into my inbox and much to my surprise, I heard Christmas music playing in a store in Allentown over the weekend.

Crazy, right?

It felt very strange and rushed, but gave my spirits a little lift just the same.

I instantly called to mind the pretty lights, colored balls and glorious smell of the Christmas tree that will grace my living room; approximately six weeks from now.

It seems that every year, in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas, my household gets hammered with large and unexpected expenses.

Every year.

In the midst of hoping that this year, things will be different, fate threw back his head and bellowed out a huge belly laugh, "Muah ha ha ha!" and started the fun a month early.

It began with a $1,000 auto repair bill, an oil tank fill at $400, home and auto insurance bills to the tune of $1,200, another $200 auto repair bill and the demise of our microwave oven.
