Firefighters from five companies on Saturday quickly conquered a fire that destroyed a Franklin Township garage. The garage, next to a home at 867 Main Road, caught fire at about 11 a.m. Carbon County dispatchers said they could hear someone screaming for a fire extinguisher during the 911 call. Donna Shistel, 62, of Barnesville, is facing charges of driving under the influence after a vehicle stop on Taggertsville Road in Rush Township, on April 21. Shistel was stopped at 3:02 p.m., then refused to submit to a blood test.

White eliminated in semis
The District 11 Class AAA Singles Tennis Tournament played out pretty much according to form on Friday at Saucon Valley High School. Included in those results was Pleasant Valley senior Jon White advancing to the semis as the tournament's third seed after beating Will Kyaw of East Stroudsburg North in the quarterfinals. White's tournament then came to an end in the semifinals when he lost to Emmaus' Matt FitzMaurice.

Richard and Barbara Getz Sr. of Palmerton recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married on April 10, 1965, at St. Matthew's Church in Kunkletown by the Rev. Aiden Bohner. Relive the great music of the past at the Tamaqua Community Art Center as the Legends Oldies Band performs a concert of golden hits from the '50s to the '70s.
