Palmerton board picks president, fills seat

A former Palmerton Area School District board president is back in a familiar chair for a few months.

Director Barry Scherer was unanimously voted Tuesday by his fellow board members to succeed Chuck Myers, who resigned last month, as president.Scherer will serve in the role until the district's reorganization meeting in December."Thanks to the board for having confidence in me," Scherer said. "The president is just one of nine members. The primary purpose is to conduct meetings and conduct them in a civil manner. That is my anticipation for the next couple of months."Earl Paules, the leading vote-getter in the primary election, was unanimously tabbed to fill the vacant seat on the board.Paules, who was essentially a lock to be elected to the board in November's election, agreed to take his seat early.He was sworn in at the start of Tuesday's meeting.In other business:On Tuesday, the board:• Approved a notice of charges for employee #0061• Accepted the resignation of Suzanne Lynn as a middle school special education teacher and middle school basketball coach.• Approved Lauren Michalik as middle school special education teacher at a salary of $43,982.• Approved Vanessa Bell as a K-6 substitute, Patrick Crowley as a 7-12 substitute, Laura Cressley as a K-12 music substitute and Wendy Magner as a cafe substitute.• Removed Megan Wagner from the substitute list.• Accepted the resignation of Paula Strohl, cafeteria worker.• Approved Brianna Bush as a long-term substitute teacher at S.S. Palmer.• Approved Frank Rocco, effective Oct. 3, as a full-time custodian at a salary of $42,148.• Approved Amy Carrelli as a four-hour cafe worker at the high school and Shannon Ledo as a four-hour cafe worker at Parkside Education Center, both at the rate of $12.31 per hour.• Approved the transfer of Kristen Anglemyer from dishwasher to assistant head chef at the high school at the rate of $14.60 per hour.• Approved the transfer of Audrey Ravert from assistant head chef to head chef at the high school at the rate of $15.58.• Approved Tanya Hess as a reading specialist at a salary of $48,278.• Approved Laura Cressley as a volunteer to assist with junior and senior high music productions.• Approved a contract with Art Feinberg as an independent contractor, school psychologist, at the rate of $400 per day. Feinberg will be used as needed and his contract is not to exceed 120 days.• Approved Christine King as an instructional assistant at a rate of $14.47 per hour.• Approved Ken Mattem as the junior high band director.• Approved Kevin Young as the co-adviser of junior high student council.• Approved memorandum of understandings with borough and state police.• Approved a settlement agreement with student #20058.
