Weatherly addresses parking concerns

Weatherly Borough officials said they have heard concerns about parking at the Weatherly Hillclimb, and they're working to address them.

The first of two hillclimb events for 2017 was held on June 10-11, and turnout was strong. But with limited space around the hillclimb pit area, some had trouble finding parking.Resident Jeff Miller brought it up at Monday's borough council meeting, asking if there was parking available at a nearby foundry."It's something we're going to have to address because it is becoming a problem, with the event growing," said Joseph Cyburt, who serves on council and the hillclimb committee.Mayor Tom Connors said that spectator parking is a problem at each of the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association events, because they are held on closed public streets. But he said Weatherly isn't the worst.Several years ago it was proposed that the borough build a walking bridge that would allow residents to park across the Black Creek at the former Tung-Sol property, but the bridge never went forward.Miller said that he spoke to more than one individual who got a ticket for parking on North Street during the hillclimb.Connors said that just because the event benefits the town doesn't mean that drivers don't have to follow the borough's ordinances with regard to parking.Cyburt said that police ticketed some cars that were parked illegally because they would have blocked a firetruck from getting to some homes on the street, but he pledged to look into the parking issue further."We're going to take care of it and try to work things out," Cyburt said.Council also said they were informed that Lehigh Township is no longer interested in a police partnership.Officials said they heard from the township that they were putting the idea on hold.Borough manager Harold Pudliner said that the township was waiting to see if Harrisburg plans to implement a fee for municipalities that do not use state police coverage. Gov. Tom Wolf proposed a $25 per capita fee for townships without local police.
