T-C eliminates Anthracite

One swing is all it takes to change the complexion of a game.

It's something players on the Tri-County and Anthracite 10-12-year-old All-Star teams know well.Cody Orsulak lifted Anthracite to a 9-8 victory over Tri-County with a walk-off home run last week in the District 18 10-12-year-old Little League Tournament.Jacob Bobish returned the favor Wednesday.Bobish's two-out, two-run home run to straightaway centerfield in the bottom of the third inning in a tie game propelled Tri-County to a 5-3 win over Anthracite in a loser's bracket game in Summit Hill."In the first game, he had a chance, two at-bats, with runners in scoring position and he grounded out twice," Tri-County assistant coach Brian Billig said of Bobish. "And we told him, that if you had one hit, we win that game. And he got his redemption tonight."Bobish couldn't help but smile afterward."It felt really nice," he said. The blast highlighted a three-run third for Tri-County, which trailed 3-2 entering the inning.Jason Lazar worked an impressive at-bat to start the rally, singling down the leftfield line with a full count. Isaac Ferrera followed with a double to put runners on second and third base.A Joe Walko groundout brought in Lazar to tie the game at 3-3 before Bobish went deep.Bobish's bomb into the trees over the centerfield fence was one of three Tri-County home runs. Ferrera and Noah Billig hit back-to-back solo homers in the bottom of the first inning to give Tri-County a 2-1 lead."We have all the confidence in the world in anybody in this lineup, especially the top of the order," said Brian Billig. "And we like our chances when we have the top of the order up, and they came through again."Anthracite took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Matt Machalik, who reached on an error, came around to score. Machalik moved to third base on Michael Pascoe's single, and raced home when Pascoe attempted to steal second.A two-run homer to center field off the bat of Drew Kokinda in the top of the second inning gave Anthracite a 3-2 lead. Stephen Hood started the inning with a stellar at-bat, hitting a 2-2 pitch to leftfield before Kokinda connected. But Bobish settled in on the mound for Tri-County, allowing just three hits over the final four innings as Anthracite stranded four base runners down the stretch."They made plays, we didn't," said Anthracite manager Ron Hood. "They hit mistakes, and we fouled mistakes off. That was the difference. They had the three home runs that brought in four of their five runs."Anthracite had a scoring opportunity in the top of the third when Machalik led off the inning with a single. Orsulak followed and reached on a fielder's choice at second base before Michael Pascoe (2-for-2) walked to put runners at first and second. But Bobish got out of the jam and the inning with a bizarre 4-6-2-3 double play."We hit the ball hard. I think every game we played we hit the ball hard," said Hood. "It's just, we were hitting it at people."Tri-County will face Valley East on Friday in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament.STAY READY … Chase Weaver came into the game as a substitute for Anthracite and got his first at-bat in the top of the fifth inning, dropping down a bunt for a single.OOPS … Tri-County carried only one bench player, Jacob Near, who came into the game when the team took the field in the top of the fourth inning. But Near never batted, which meant Tri-County failed to meet the mandatory player requirements. That will result in the suspension of manager Mark Lazar for the team's next two tournament games. "His mandatory play was six consecutive defensive outs, which he had. And bat one time, which he didn't," said District Administrator Jim Burns, who was onsite.Anthracite 120 000 - 3 6 0Tri-County 203 00x - 5 7 2B. Hood, Orsulak (5) and Orsulak; Bobish and Walko.
