Franklin official talks contracted police services

A Franklin Township official said he remains interested in contracted police services with Lehighton.

Rod Green, chairman of the township's board of supervisors, conveyed his thoughts to borough council on Monday."We're still interested in it," Green said. "I just think it's a win-win for both Franklin and Lehighton."Green further told council he believes the department's joining forces would be a good thing, and reiterated that Franklin would definitely like to see it."We're interested, and we just want to move forward with it," he said.Council President Grant Hunsicker told Green council would take his remarks under advisement. At a special meeting Aug. 18, council met with Franklin and Mahoning townships concerning contracted police services.Several days later, at its regular council meeting on Aug. 22, council made a motion to continue researching the possibility of a partnership between all three. At that time, borough police Chief Brian Biechy said any contract would likely take at least two years to get in place if things were to move forward. After Monday's meeting, borough Manager Nicole Beckett said both townships had agreed to share the costs of the research with the borough. The research is taking place as time allows, Beckett said.
