Thorpe police cancel event

With the immediate future of Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall in limbo, the borough's police department has decided to take a year off from hosting its policeman's ball.

"Due to some unforeseen circumstances with the hall, we're just going to take a one-year pause and come back better in 2018," police Chief Joe Schatz said Tuesday.Jim McHugh, who had managed the hall since 2013, and the borough ended contract negotiations on Dec. 29.Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said the two sides were negotiating a lease of the hall to McHugh, but those talks broke down."We're still hoping to lease it to someone in the future," she said of the facility. This year would have been the ninth year for the ball, which has traditionally been held at Memorial Hall.Schatz said the police department isn't losing any money by putting a one-year pause on the ball.Proceeds from the event benefit a different community organization selected by the police department each year. The last two recipients have been Turn To Us and Autism Speaks.
