Eagles down Lehighton

Lehighton head coach Rich Oertner knew his team had its work cut out for them against Blue Mountain.

The Eagles sport a front court with several players taller than the tallest Indian. With a limited look at any kind of interior game for the Tribe, Oertner's club would have to convert on most of the opportunities they did get - and they didn't.Despite their off-shooting night, the Indians made the Eagles work for their 47-30 Schuylkill League win to round out the regular season."We missed a lot of lay-ups," Oertner said. "In the first half, I thought we played pretty well. We moved the ball well and got some good shots, but we just missed those shots."The limited looks in the first frame for Lehighton saw the winners take the early advantage, 11-7.A similar second period saw the Indians challenge and cut the lead to 13-11 off a pull-up jumper from Damian Mele. However, back-to-back possessions for Blue Mountain resulted in five points to take a six-point lead a minute later, which eventually turned into a 20-15 halftime advantage."We were a little too sloppy throughout the game with the basketball and credit to Lehighton for putting us in the position where we made those mistakes," Blue Mountain head coach Dustin Werdt said. "I think at halftime, we made the necessary adjustments, regrouped, re-focused, and adjusted to the defenses and played a lot better."Mason Zerbe's lay-up opened the scoring out of the break, but Andre McDowell countered with a drive before teammate Addison Howland added a free throw. But that's when things started to 'click' for the Eagles, as they finished the final five-and-a-half minutes of the third with a 12-5 spree for a 34-23 swell with one frame to go. Five different players produced for the winners during that pivotal stretch.Blue Mountain outscored the Tribe 13-7 in the fourth, as Aaron Albertini scored seven of his 13 in the last session."We're playing with five guards," Oertner said. "We couldn't play any other defense than what we did, because as soon as you go man against them, they pound it inside, and we're not big enough to play with them that way."The 6-7 center for the Eagles, Jakob Bieber, totaled 16 points and nine boards. The stats that won't appear in the box score were the most effective, as he continuously altered shots and affected attempts throughout the evening.WRAP IT UP ...
