Narcan, courthouse cameras approved

Two initiatives Carbon County officials approved will provide additional safety measures for residents and county staff on the job.

On Thursday, the commissioners approved a motion to enroll in the Premier Medical Supplies and Pharmaceutical Program, available through the U.S. Communities Cooperative Purchasing Program, for the purchase of Narcan nasal spray at a cost of $75 for a two-pack. The spray will be used by the Carbon County Adult Probation and Juvenile Probation offices.Greg Armstrong, district court administrator, said that the courts anticipate the 12 adult probation and five juvenile probation officers will carry the Narcan while on field duty. This is the first time these officers will carry Narcan. In addition, the commissioners also approved a proposal from Tyco SimplexGrinnell of Allentown for upgrading the 16-camera analog CCTV system in the courthouse at a total cost of $73,228.The new system, a 50-camera IP security camera system, will be installed in the courthouse and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The current system is about 11 years old.Sheriff Anthony Harvilla explained that the new system will allow a lot more options for the staff and better video coverage of the courthouse. He said that the current system is limited to the main hallways of the courthouse, but lacks perimeter coverage and has a lot of blind spots."We also want to make sure we capture the areas where we move prisoners," he said. "This system will allow us to have 50 video feeds of all the areas of the courthouse."He said that the new system will also provide the future possibility of using video passcards to access certain rooms.
