L. Towamensing supervisors table agenda items

Most of the Lower Towamensing Township Board of Supervisors meeting was tabled Tuesday night.

Of the three supervisors on the board, members Ron Walbert and Jesse Mendez were present, but Chairman Brent Green was absent. The problem was that he has pertinent information about some of the topics that were to be discussed. The items on the agenda that were tabled included a quote from Cougle's Recycling Inc., an electronic waste event, agriculture security, Council of Governments auction surplus items, Bruce Breiner quote and Vonage quote.Only attendance to a convention dinner and an office supply expo were voted on, both with a yes to send someone from the township.Of the tabled items, Cougle's Recycling in Hamburg proposed providing six 8-yard containers for recycling collection that would be picked up weekly. The cost would be $261 per week.Walbert said that if the township is going to offer a place for recycling, then he would rather use the larger 40-yard containers."I know we had nothing but problems with the smaller ones," he said.Nothing was discussed involving the e-waste event or COG auction, because Green has the updates for the council. The supervisors reviewed a quote fromBreiner for construction of sidewalks in areas around the municipal building. It was tabled because Breiner is related to Mendez, so he would not be able to vote on it.The Vonage quote involved a new phone system in the municipal building."I think we should upgrade," Walbert said. "This is the same system that was here when they built the building."The supervisors decided to seek other quotes, since Vonage would cost $259 a month. Township secretary Christine Wentz said she would look into getting additional quotes. When the meeting opened up for public discussion, Walbert brought up a concern he has about the cost of office furniture in the municipal building. The board had approved in February the purchase of up to $3,000 worth of office furniture, but the bill came in at $8,000.Mendez said they should discuss the matter when Green is present.Township resident and member of the Lower Towamensing Township Planning Commission, John "Jay" Mullikin III asked the supervisors about some other expenditures. He said he heard that several household items were purchased for the Stoney Ridge Park and Recreation Center - including two televisions, a refrigerator, microwave, stove, and pots and pans - and wanted to know if it was true."Is someone going to live up there?" he asked. "The public should be able to question the cost."Walbert said they were purchased, but they were authorized by Green and he didn't have any further information about it.Mendez added that the expenditures really need to be discussed with Green present in order to provide an explanation.
