There was something new in this year's annual Pinewood Derby race of Lehighton Boy Scout Pack 145.

For the first time, kindergarten-age boys could participate.The event featured Pinewood Derby cars made by 16 boys between the grades of kindergarten and fifth grade.Scoutmaster Troy Abelovsky said Boy Scouts of America implemented a new program this year to include kindergarten-age children in the races. Pack 145 is the only unit in Carbon County approved for the change.Next year, all Scout troops can have kindergartners in the race.The Pinewood Derby was held at St. John's Church in Mahoning Township, which sponsors the Cub pack.The top four competitors go onto district competition. Alternates are also chosen.Winner of the Pack 145 event was Tanner Kintz, followed by Gavin Kester, second; Landon Abelovsky, third; Hunter Kintz, fourth; Devan Curran, fifth; and Daniel Curran, sixth.The participants competed in several heats with the cars timed via computer.After the derby, the top racers competed against Scout leaders.Besides the trophies for the fastest cars, there were other awards given. Recipients are:• Best Detail: Jay Kester.• Most Imaginative: John Kintz.• Best Use of Decals: Heather and Austin Diehl.• Most Complicated Design: Ryan Solski.• Most Original Design: Karlye Kintz.• Hottest Car: Devin Kline.• Most Creative: Megan Kusse.• Sleekest Car: Joe Curran III• Craftsmanship: Tanner Kintz.• Most Aero-Dynamic: Hunter Kintz.• Most Unusual Design: Corbin Kline.• Most Patriotic: Landon Abelovsky.• Coolest Design: Collen Horn.• Most Realistic: Ryan Kusse.• Most Unique Car: Kian Bowman.• Best Wedge Shape: Daniel Curran.• Best Accessories: Trevor Roth.• Fast & Furious Award: Parker Rodgers.• Spirt of Boy Scouts: Troy Abelovsky.• Spirit of Pinewood: Devan Curran.• Best of Show: Carlin West.• Scouts' Choice: Dominic Szoke.• Leaders' Choice: Noah Solski.• Cubmaster Award: Gavin Kester.
