Man shoots gun after argument over air conditioner

A Lehigh County man shot his gun at a woman in his home Monday morning due to an argument over the use of an air conditioner and the presence of her boyfriend in the house.

William Hartmaier, 65, of Slatington, was charged with discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.Hartmaier was arraigned Monday by District Judge Rod Beck of Slatington, and released after posting $30,000 bail.According to the affidavit filed by trooper Casey Hsu of the Pennsylvania State Police:At 9:28 a.m., Hsu was dispatched to Hartmaier's home on Furnace Road, Washington Township, for a report of a disturbance. The victim told police that Hartmaier was upset with her because she had her boyfriend over at the house, and Hartmaier fired a gun in her general direction.Hsu arrived on scene and was met by Hartmaier, who said that the victim lives with him and she has recently been allowing her boyfriend to stay at the house.Hartmaier said he did not like the boyfriend being in his residence, and that he argued with the woman. He said most of the argument was over the fact that he wanted to turn the heat on and she wanted the air conditioning on.Hartmaier said he would turn the heat on and she would turn the air conditioning on or open the windows. At one point, the victim came downstairs and argued with Hartmaier before going upstairs.Hartmaier said that he was angry and upset to the point where he discharged a handgun toward the second story of the home from the base of the stairs, even though he was aware the victim and her boyfriend were on the second floor. The victim was interviewed on scene and said that she had an argument with Hartmaier on the first floor of the residence and then walked upstairs and was in the second floor hallway when she heard a gunshot. She turned around and saw a bullet hole in the wall behind her, and showed state police investigators the hole, which was consistent with the size and shape a bullet would make when striking a wall. The boyfriend was interviewed on scene and said that he was in a second-story bedroom when the incident occurred.Hartmaier told state police investigators that the handgun he usedwasin his bedroom, under a pillow on his bed.Investigatorsrecovered the firearm where Hartmaier said it was.Hartmaier's preliminary hearing before Beck will be rescheduled, though no new date has been determined.
