Jim Thorpe makes personnel moves

Jim Thorpe Borough Council announced several personnel moves at its meeting Thursday night.

Councilman Jay Miller said the borough would be adding a truck driver/laborer hybrid position to its public works department. While the borough has a candidate in mind, it only voted to post the position on Thursday so it would not identify the likely hire.Council also voted to add two part-time police officers to the staff. The hires were John Orsulak of Nesquehoning and Anthony Campanell of Allentown. Both candidates passed their background checks and will start at $16 per hour, according to Mayor Michael Sofranko.Police Chief Joe Schatz also updated council on a central court "test run" Wednesday at the Carbon County Courthouse. The county is experimenting with central court, which would bring all defendants to the courthouse one day per week for their preliminary hearing, instead of the hearings being held at the offices of the presiding district magistrate."I think it went very well," Schatz said. "There are still some kinks to work out, but our officers were there for about two hours on Wednesday. The feedback we got was that it does seem to be progressing. When the bugs get worked out, I think it's going to be a great thing."
