Coaldale kitchen fire injures 1

Fast response by police and a homeowner is credited with knocking down a kitchen blaze Saturday that injured one resident in a house situated in the center of a row of seven wood-frame row houses.

Emergency responders were dispatched at 6:54 p.m. by the Schuylkill Communications Center to a report of a kitchen fire at 65 Second St. At 7 p.m., a second call went out for a working structure fire, drawing emergency fire and medical units from Tamaqua, Lansford and Lehighton.One occupant "sustained minor injuries as he was attempting to put out the fire before we arrived," said Kevin Soberick, second assistant chief of the Coaldale Fire Department.Firefighters said they saw a substantial amount of smoke pouring out of the rear of the building upon arrival. Coaldale police and the homeowner were able to knock down the flames, keeping the blaze from spreading to other rooms or adjacent homes.Neighboring residents evacuated safely.According to courthouse records, 65 Second St. is owned by Emil Sofsky of Woodhaven, New York. Sofsky also owns wholly or in part some of the remaining structures, all of which are attached.The row of historic miners' houses was built in 1900.Coaldale fire police detoured traffic in both directions of Route 209 and set up an additional detour point at East Ridge and Second Street.
