How much wine are you really drinking?

Size matters! Enjoy a glass of wine - just one - with these three tricks of the pour. A summer filled with festive gatherings is a happy summer indeed!

But if "wine o'clock" comes early - and often - it's a good idea to check your serving size.Call it a design flaw, but we are notoriously bad judges of volume when it comes to wine, and factors like the shape of the glass and even your pour pattern can affect how much you consume. To enjoy your drink without overdoing it, keep these tips in mind:• Beware of width. A standard serving of wine is 5 ounces, but we tend to pour significantly more into a wide, oversize glass as, opposed to a standard, narrow glass. Consider using narrow wineglasses at home. And when you do drink from a wide glass, keep in mind the width of that glass, and not just the height of the liquid you pour. If a host or bartender pours for you, make it a habit to size up your serving before you start sipping.• Understand contrast vs. camouflage. When pouring red wine, the color contrast between the wine and glass acts as a visual cue that says "stop!" and, believe it or not, it tends to have a moderating influence on the volume you pour. But white wine can be trickier. You'll want to pay extra attention when pouring white, since the matching wine and clear glass make it easier to overdo it.• Find a surface. Holding the bottle and glass in the air increases your pour by 12 percent. Find a table or counter instead. Besides resulting in a more reasonable portion, it may cut your dry cleaning bill!- Cleveland Clinic Wellness
