Fair offers Schuylkill grown cooking contest

The second annual Schuylkill County Grown Cooking Contest will be held at the Schuylkill County Fair at 6 p.m. Aug. 3 under the south overhang of the Main Exhibit Hall.

The Schuylkill County Grown program is designed to promote locally grown produce and other farm market products, such as milk, eggs and even Christmas trees. People today are interested in where their food comes from and how it is produced or grown. This program offers a way for producers and businesses to mark those products that are grown in the county. There are two categories, adult and youth (under 18).Adults are asked to prepare a soup of their choice.Youth participants will be making a quick-bread, which can be in the form of a loaf, muffins, cake, etc.All entries must be prepared ahead of time, and be ready to serve at the time of the contest. The main rule for both categories is that each entry must contain at least three items that were grown in Schuylkill County. These could be items from a farm market, retail store or from your own garden.Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in each category. To enter or for more information, contact Melissa Seigfried at the Schuylkill Conservation District at 570-622-3742 ext. 111 or via email at mseigfried@co.schuylkill.pa.us.
