Slatington council fills empty seat

Michael Brogan Sr. will have his own name plate at the Slatington Borough Council table for the monthly meeting Feb. 8.

Brogan was appointed in a unanimous vote during Monday night's borough meeting. The 45-year resident was appointed to a two-year term seat that had been vacated by Joe Wechsler. Wechsler won the four-year term seat during the November election, replacing Galen Freed. The council received two letters of interest for the position, Brogan and 23-year-long on-and-off-again resident David Rockel. Both men had a chance to state their interest to the council before a decision was made.Brogan told council, "It's time to do something and be a part of this community."He said he looked forward to working with Jon Rinker, whom he had known since his days as a volunteer firefighter."I can vouch for him; we were volunteer firefighters back in the day with Hose Company Number One," Rinker said.Rockel told the board he had fresh ideas for the borough."I see a lot of things that go on. I believe if you see things you don't like, you have to do something about it. Not just sit back and complain."The board took less than 10 minutes to deliberate on its appointment in executive session before appointing Brogan to the vacancy. The appointment was immediately followed with electing Brogan as chairman of Slatington's Health and Human Services Committee."The three things you need to qualify to be on the board are you must be 18, a resident for at least a year and a registered voter. I made sure both candidates qualified before we appointed one of them," said borough office manager Duane Dellecker.Brogan will have a chance to work with the board at the next borough meeting on Feb. 8.
