West Penn water fight continues

Water extraction was an issue in both West Penn and Eldred Township as 2016 rolled around.

In June, Nestle Waters withdrew its application to withdraw 200,000 gallons of water daily from Chestnut Springs in Eldred. But just down the road in West Penn Township, the war between the residents and the water extraction companies continues to rage. The fight has been ongoing in West Penn since early last year.In January 2016, a group of 30 residents filed a lawsuit in the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County against MC Resource Development Co., Ringgold Acquisition Group LLC, Group 2 LLC, Snow Green Acres LTD as well as James J. Land Jr., Larry C. Hower and David Knoedler. The suit claims that the business of extracting water in the area is a nuisance to residents and nearby landowners. The chief claim is that the increase in truck traffic has made the roads unsafe. The case is still pending.Additionally, West Penn Township has adopted an ordinance which regulates water extraction.Over the past several months, township residents, the township zoning officer and the supervisors have questioned whether Ringgold Acquisitions group II is in compliance with the ordinance.Several residents have reported disturbances with their wells, including dirty and muddy tap water.
