NW tops Bombers

Northwestern head coach Jim Moll is constantly looking for effort from his wrestlers.

In order to maintain a high level of aggressiveness, the Tigers' expectations and hard work need to remain steadfast atop their priority list.Moll and his staff were pleased with what they saw from the Tigers on Thursday against Palmerton.Northwestern defeated Palmerton 56-24 to improve its record to 3-0 on the young season."We wrestled hard tonight," Moll said after he saw his team build a 50-0 lead on its way to the Colonial League victory. "I saw a lot of stuff that I liked and I'm always looking for that effort. We definitely saw that from our guys tonight, so I'm happy."The first six bouts saw the winners earn three pins and a tech fall, coupled with a pair of Blue Bomber forfeits, all contributing to a 35-0 lead."I knew Northwestern was a tough team," Palmerton head coach Justin Peterson said. "All the way up through 160, we knew they were going to be tough. I told the kids that we'd have to cut down on the bonus points in the lower weights. But they were just too tough tonight."The Tigers' early blitz took the match to the 145-pound bout, where Palmerton sophomore Chase Faulstick squared off against Tiger senior Tyler Derr. After a scoreless first, Derr nabbed a reversal and Faulstick an escape for a 2-1 Derr lead. But in the third, Faulstick escaped to tie it at the end of three. In the first overtime session, the Bomber nearly had a takedown, but failed to finish the maneuver, taking the bout to a double OT session.Derr began down and eventually nabbed an escape and added two near-fall points in the second session for the exciting win."In practice, we are constantly working on stamina, and that came into play because you have to be alive in those late stages," Derr said. "Chase gave me a good run out there and it was definitely a even match, but it feels really good to get the win."Jackson Bernhard ensued with another Tiger pin and Caleb Clymer walked off with another forfeit victory for a 50-0 swell.Palmerton's Riad Kapur changed that, pinning Isaac Bredbenner in 2:26 for the Bombers' first points. Kyle Kralik and John Iles tacked on two more mat-slappers that cut it to 50-18.First-year grappler Micah Marushak ofr Northwestern stopped the Bomber run with his career-first pin at 220 pounds, much to the delight of the Tiger faithful."That was his first win and it was great that he got a pin, so I'm really happy for him," Moll said.At 285, Palmerton veteran Jared Mooney produced a pin in 2:07 to finish out the evening.'TIS THE SEASON ... Both Northwestern and Palmerton are off to tournaments next week. "The tournament that we go to (Delco Duals) isn't as strong of competition as what we've faced so far this year, so hopefully, we can get the guys some confidence in order to start the new year strong," Peterson said.LET THE RECORD SHOW...
