Fillies blast Weatherly

It's not always easy to play the following day, especially after an overtime loss.

But Marian displayed a short-term memory during Friday's Schuylkill League contest against Weatherly. The Fillies didn't look like a team that lost in five quarters to Loyalsock last night, as an intense defensive effort led the white and gold to a 56-26 victory over the Wreckers."We definitely did better than yesterday," said Fillies' guard Emily Schaud. "But we definitely need to pick it up a little more to be where we need to."Marian's full-court press stifled Weatherly for a majority of the contest. The Fillies outscored the Wreckers by an 11-1 margin in the opening frame and never trailed."They have such a good defensive team," said Weatherly head coach Kevin Kringe. "You're really putting yourself in a big hole (at the beginning), but we had to try and fight out of that. To my girls credit, we didn't give up. Give credit to Marian. They had a tough game last night and they still battled defensively. Karnish (Brenna) is tough, Schaud (Emily) is tough..it's hard to rally back from that."Karnish scored seven of her team-high 17 points in the initial period. She was able to run comfortably in transition frequently, as Marian's defense turned directly into offense. The middle two quarters went much better for the Weatherly. The Wreckers scored 22 points during the sequence-16 from Emily Zoscin, who finished with a game-high 19."She (Zoscin) does a lot for us. We try to have her organize everything and get other people involved. She has to see the floor a little better. She's working on that right now. They kept working and they started to see some things (as the game went on), but we still have a lot of work to do. We're not a well-polished machine yet."But the Fillies slammed the door shut for good in the fourth frame.Marian held the Wreckers to just three points in the final quarter. Offensively, the Fillies were able to break the Weatherly press, and then patiently pass through the Wreckers' half-court zone scheme to get open looks."I can't wait for Christmas break to get back into the gym and we can just concentrate on basketball for a week," Kringe said. "We can get back to some of our pressing and zone fundamentals and I'm looking forward to a nice run in the second half."G 4 3 ... Marian's Gianna Agosti drained three triples and finished with 13 points.BEHIND ENEMY LINES ... Schaud said she was familiar with the type of things the Wreckers ran on Friday. "I actually played for their coach's wife, so I knew a little bit what they were going to come with," she said. "They really come to play, we still need to improve more on our defense, because that is the main focus on our team."BACK TO BASICS ... The Wreckers showed flashes of what their press defense was capable of, which is the type of success Kringe wants to get back to. "That's our thing," he said. "We want to create chaos. But we haven't been able to do that because we lost some of our fundamentals. We have to get in front of that extra pass, and we also need to continue to work on boxing out."WEATHERLYZoscin 6-4-6-19, Hoffman 1-0-0-2, Gower 1-0-0-2, Peiffer 1-0-0-2, Caravella 0-0-0-0, DeSpirito 0-0-0-0, Henry 0-0-0-0, Obert 0-0-0-0, Hinkle 0-0-0-0, Ache 0-0-0-0, Hernandez 0-1-2-1.
