Giving feels good

People have lots of reasons to give back to local charities. It gets rid of unwanted or unused items, it can help with your taxes, and most of all, it feels good.

Luckily, there are a lot of ways to give back this season, and you don't have to look hard.Since Black Friday, the Times News has been running a list of donation requests from local nonprofits that work in the area who work to make life better for people and animals who need assistance.While there's no wrong way to donate, giving to an established nonprofit means that your gift has the potential to help for many months after the holidays are over.This year we've heard from groups that help the elderly, people dealing with chronic illness, and those who are trying to tackle the feral cat program around Carbon County. They are organizations with a track record of success, who rely on the generosity of the public to continue their missions.Meals on Wheels of Palmerton is seeking monetary donations, postage stamps and gas cards. Most of all, they need volunteer drivers. The organization delivers meals five days a week, without any government funding. They can be reached at 610-826-1163.Turn To Us provides assistance to people and families who are dealing with major and chronic illnesses. They're looking for stamps, gas cards and restaurant gift cards for people who are traveling to receive treatment. They are also looking for greeting cards - specifically ones with birthday, holiday and "thinking of you" greetings. Their center is located at 404 Center St. in Jim Thorpe.Feed the People of Lansford holds a monthly free meal that feeds dozens of community members and their families. They're looking for gift cards to local grocery stores, art supplies for kids, and food items, specifically ham and turkey. They can be reached at 570-657-1480.The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has been providing services to people in Tamaqua for 25 years. They are looking for coloring books, word searches, art supplies, plastic 5-ounce cups and baby wipes.
