Bears' matmen are eliminated

By the time Saturday evening came for Pleasant Valley during the Northeast Regional AAA tournament, there really wasn't much left to wrestle for other than pride.

The Bears saw a hopeful Friday night turn into season-ending conclusion Saturday at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium, as none of PV's four wrestlers were able to place in the top-four to qualify for the PIAA state tournament in Hershey this weekend.Ahmad Curtis (HWT) and Trent Thomas (195) were the lone Bears to be wrestling during Saturday's championship round, but it was for fifth place and a final shot at pride on the season.Curtis was able to end his senior year with a 3-2 victory over Freedom's Cordell Cotto to take fifth. That was a small consolation for what could have been for the Bears' senior, as a 6-2 semifinal loss to Dallas Area's Ryan Monk dumped Curtis into the consolation round, needing only one win to qualify for Hershey. The only wrestler standing in his way was Pocono Mountain East's Jeremy Candelario, who took fifth at districts. Unfortunately for Curtis, Candelario had his weekend to shine at regionals, as he worked through an 8-3 decision over Curtis to move onto Hershey and at the same time, end Curtis's quest."I thought Ahmad was the better wrestler, but Candelario did a good job on capitalizing when he needed to," said Pleasant Valley head coach Justin Micklos. "It's unfortunate for Ahmad being a senior, but I'm proud of him either way. He wrestled back and took fifth and he's a heck of a kid and I'll miss him."After losing in the quarterfinals to Whitehall's Joey Gladish, Thomas bounced back with two wins in the wrestle backs before facing Emmaus senior Thomas Alcaro in the same round that Curtis met Candelario. And Thomas's fate preceded that of his teammate, as he fell 3-1 to Alcaro, ending his bid for a shot at Hershey. Thomas would get another crack at Gladish for fifth place, but the Zephyr proved again to tame his counterpart by a 5-1 margin.Jason Jacobi (120) and Brody Keefe (170) each had to fight their way through the consolation brackets as well, as both advanced to the third round of consys before succumbing to elimination. Jacobi lost to Bethlehem Catholic's Jake Riegel 5-2, while Keefe lost to Father Judge's Idris White by a fall in 28 seconds to end their seasons. For Micklos, he looked at the weekend in a positive light for what the future holds for the program."I wouldn't say it's a disappointment, but something that we can build on towards next year," he said. "We have three of these guys returning next year, so hopefully they can take the next step to get to Hershey. We need to work more on our technique and have a stronger mindset. Our kids are really close, it's just going to take more work."Top 10 Team Scores1. Bethlehem Catholic 226; 2. Nazareth 121; 3. Liberty 93; 4. Freedom 89.5; 5. Parkland 88; 6. Northampton 69; 7.
