Hair extensions do's & don'ts

If you plan to get extensions, you'll need to schedule a consultation.

Your stylist will determine how many bundles of hair you'll need. This will depend on the size of your head and the thickness of your hair, your lifestyle and how active you are.If you're a cancer patient, you'll need to wait six months from your last treatment, and also have 2 1/2 to 3 inches of new growth. If your hair is thin, you may not be able to have extensions because the hair you do have may not be thick enough to cover the area where the extensions are attached. Those with alopecia, a medical condition that causes hair loss, are also not candidates for hair extensions. Certain medications might also prevent you from getting extensions, since those medications might cause your hair to thin or fall out.On the other hand, extensions might be perfect for someone who has a scar or partial hair loss from an accident. All of these issues will be discussed during the consultation.Do's• Save up before you go. Extensions can cost anywhere from $150 on up, with the average being between $300 and $500. If you want a custom color, that will increase the price.• Plan on a couple weeks from the time of your consultation until the time you will have your extensions attached. It takes five to 10 business days for the extensions to arrive once they are ordered. Additional time would be needed for custom coloring.• If you color or perm your hair, do it three to five days before your extensions are applied.• On the day your extensions are applied, you will need to clarify your hair three times before arriving at the salon. No conditioner or moisturizer can be used. Hair must be "squeaky clean" and completely dry. This step can be done in the salon by prior arrangement.• Plan on being at the salon for a couple hours, at least, on the day of your appointment. It could take from an hour to three hours or more.• After your extensions are applied, use a sulphate-free shampoo, which won't break down the bonds.• If you swim in the ocean or in chlorine, wash your hair afterward.• Feel free to get touchups while your extensions are in.• When sleeping, wear your hair in a loose scrunchie or braid.• Have your extensions checked by your stylist after two weeks.Don'ts• Don't get your hair cut for at least a month before having extensions applied. Hair has to be cut in a certain way to allow the extensions to be attached.• Don't wash your hair for two days after your extensions are applied so that the cuticle will have time to close.• Don't use a flat iron or curling iron near the bond that attaches the extension to your own hair, or you will melt the bond. You can use it on the extension itself, however. You can also use hot rollers.• Don't wash your hair more than every three or four days. If you feel you must, use a dry shampoo on your scalp between washings.
