Lions Club holds charter night

The Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club held its 39th charter observance dinner on June 1 at the Mahoning Valley Country Club.

After the Lions' toast, "Not above you, not below you, but with you," the gathering was entertained by the music of the Munoz Brothers: Damian who is attending Susquehanna University and Ivan, who is attending West Chester University.The first business of the evening was the installation of officers by Vice District Governor Larry Williams. As he installed the 2015-16 officers, he noted that the president, secretary and assistant secretary were automatically members of the District Governor's Advisory Committee.Officers are: Henry Altemose, president; Larry Engle, first vice president; Norman Engle Jr., second vice president; Richard DeLuca, third vice president; Albina Engle, secretary; Heather Nunnemacher, assistant secretary; Wayne Engle Sr., treasurer; Raymond Nunnemacher, lion tamer; Earl Reabold, tail twister; and Burdell Steigerwalt, chaplain.Richard Beers was given credit for helping raise the money for student scholarships. Recipients were given $500 each. They are Morgan Balliet of Palmerton Area High School; Holly Hinkle of Lehighton Area High School; and Dakota Perez and Troy Freeby, of Palmerton and Lehighton schools respectively, who attend the Carbon Career & Technical Institute.Perez will continue her education at Lincoln Technical School. Freeby will be looking for an apprenticeship program in HVAC after graduation. Balliet has been active in the school's field hockey program, and Hinkle has been active in volleyball and playing piano. The presentations were made by Richard Beers and Larry Engle.The Melvin Jones Fellowship is presented to a person who made a $1,000 donation to Lions Clubs International. The honor was named for the founder of Lions. The donations help the clubs reach their humanitarian goals around the world.The winner, chosen by committee, is a person who is always there to help teach Lions. She helped her husband, Ed Steigerwalt, in his journey through Lions. His journey ended a couple months ago. The recipient was Viola Steigerwalt. She received a Lions pin from Williams and a plaque from the club.Steigerwalt said, "The club has been helpful all these years. It has been a good part of my life."The Lions Foundation Award goes to a person who makes a $500 donation to the Pennsylvania Lions where it becomes part of a permanent endowment. Williams said the recipient is Richard Whiteman, who has been big into the Lions-Lionesses Carbon County Fair. He is always there to help with any and all activities. He received a certificate and an emblem.Acting President Henry Altemose thanked club members for their help, saying, "It's been an experience. I couldn't have done it without you." He is also the incoming president.Williams said the new officers or other interested Lions can learn what the officers' positions entail by going to lionsclubs.org and clicking on leadership development. Your club membership number will be required.
