Council discusses parking woes

Summit Hill Borough Council said on Monday it will consider giving more land to the Anthracite Little League Association to relieve a parking problem at the borough's Little League field.

The discussion came after borough resident Audrin Miller, who owns a garage along Richards Avenue behind the field, said that sometimes at the baseball games, fans not only block access to his garage but are rude. He said on one occasion a fan followed him into his garage and another time a spectator directed vulgarities at him.He said he believes these were visiting team fans and not local residents. Also in attendance was Roobhenn Smith, president of the association, who said, "I want to make sure we don't cause any inconveniences to the residents. We don't want to sour relations with our community over parking."Miller was first to bring up the issue and suggested prohibiting parking.Councilman John O'Gurek suggested that an area where deteriorated tennis courts and a basketball court exist might be used for parking.Council member Michael Alabovitz said a few parking spaces might even be added near the refreshment stand.Smith then asked the council if it would consider giving an area adjoining the Little League field to create a parking area. He stressed that the association would not eliminate existing recreation facilities, which include a playground. He said the association would also consider more recreational use of the site.A T-ball field is one of the things Smith would like to see built there.Smith said the Little League season begins in mid-April and is just ending. He said the fall season will begin after Labor Day and continue into October. He said major improvements were made to the Little League field, including installation of a new public address system."We want people to know when there is a situation, they can come to me directly," he said. The Anthracite Association is hosting divisional 9- and 10-year-old playoffs this year, which likely is adding to the parking woes. Miller said the biggest problems occurred during these playoffs. He said some of the people attending from other towns "seem like they just don't care."The motion to ban parking in the 200 block of Richards Avenue passed by a 5-1 vote. Opposed was Billy O'Gurek. In favor were John O'Gurek, Michael Alabovitz, Bill Chapman, Jesse Walck and President Michael Kokinda. Gregory Kosciolek was absent.Billy O'Gurek said, "I feel we should look at it a little more."Borough secretary/treasurer Kira Steber told Smith the borough has a recreation commission, chaired by Jodi McAndrew. She suggested that Smith speak with McAndrew regarding the Little League field proposals.
