Checkpoint nets arrests, citations

A sobriety checkpoint conducted by the Lehighton barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police on Saturday and Sunday resulted in several arrests and numerous citations being issued in Carbon and Monroe counties.

Police said the checkpoint was operated between 9 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday on various roads.The patrols resulted in four motorists being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, and a fifth driver being charged with possession of a controlled substance.In addition, eight motorists were arrested but released after passing standardized field sobriety tests.Police said 37 citations were issued to other drivers and 46 traffic warnings were also issued.In Schuylkill County, the North Central Pennsylvania Regional DUI Enforcement Program held a sobriety checkpoint July 3.A total of 629 vehicles were stopped, with 32 being detained. Of the five drivers tested for possibly driving under the influence, two adults were charged with DUI. Officers also issued 16 traffic citations, made one criminal arrest and found one seat belt violation. They issued 11 warnings. The checkpoint was staffed by 14 officers representing nine police departments.DUI enforcement efforts will continue to be conducted through July 13 on routes 61, 183, 901, 209, 1006, 309, 443, 895, 125, 25, 924 and 54.The checkpoints and patrols are funded through the state Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.Motorists are reminded to dial 911 if they suspect a drunken driver.
