Coaldale murder suspects shift blame

Two men arrested for the January 2014 death of Coaldale resident Corey Samuels have admitted beating the victim, but each claims the other is the actual murderer.

Oliver Trizarri, 21, of 645 N. Sixth St., Reading, and Stanley Kralik, 17, of 114 First St., Coaldale, were arrested by Pennsylvania State Police on Sunday night and charged with one felony count each of criminal homicide, murder in the first degree, murder in the third degree, robbery, aggravated assault and theft by unlawful taking, as well as two felony counts of conspiracy.Kralik was charged as an adult, although he was 16 at the time of the alleged crime. The charges were filed by Trooper Melissa Kryper of the Frackville state police barracks. The two men were arraigned before duty District Judge Anthony Kilker in Shenandoah.Samuels was reported as missing on Jan. 23.Coaldale Police investigated and learned he was last seen in the company of Trizarri and Kralik. The trio had entered a wooded area near Summit Hill. At that time, Trizarri and Kralik both told officers the three men had gone for a walk, but that Samuels had walked away from them after an argument. Volunteers combed the mountainous terrain for several days, but found no sign of Samuels, who had reportedly been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.Local police turned the investigation over to state police in April. In September, two people walking in the area of East Miner Street found human remains, which were later identified as those of Samuels. The remains and several articles found with them were examined by a forensic anthropologist, who determined the victim had died from sharp, blunt force trauma to the head. The manner of death was declared to be a homicide.Story unravelsAfter further investigation, state police interviewed Trizarri on Sunday night. This time, he admitted the friends were angry with the victim because of a claim made by a female friend of Kralik's.He said he agreed to help Kralik kill Samuels and they began plotting ways to lure him into the woods, where he would hit him over the head with a shovel, while Kralik held him down.He also claimed that later, as the three men were walking in the woods on Jan. 20, he wasn't sure if he could go through with it and that Kralik was the one to strike the first blow.Trizarri told Kryper that, at a predetermined signal, Kralik struck Samuels in the head.Trizarri said he then held him to the ground, pressing the victim's head into the dirt in an attempt to suffocate him. When Samuels asked why his friends were hurting him, Trizarri says he hesitated, but then remembered why he was angry with the victim. He told police he choked Samuels until he lost consciousness, then struck him several times in the head with the shovel and punched and kicked him in the groin.Trizarri noted he and Kralik took turns hitting the victim with the shovel and kicking and punching him.The two men then covered the body and blood with snow and took a wallet, cellphone and a rosary. They left the shovel in Kralik's basement, burned the wallet and smashed the cellphone. Kralik wanted to keep the rosary as a "memento" and to show his female friend so she would know she had been avenged. They rehearsed what to tell police before parting ways.Kralik was also interviewed Sunday night. He admitted becoming involved in a fight with Samuels, but claimed he only punched the victim, that it was Trizarri who struck Samuels in the head with the shovel. Both men were lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville, without bail.
