Bombers get first baseball win

For the Palmerton fans who braved the 37-degree wind chill weather yesterday, they were treated to their baseball team's first win this season by a 13-3 score over Moravian Academy.

"After two tough losses to Northwestern and Salisbury, I was concerned about how we would approach playing a team that had yet to win like us," said Palmerton coach Mike Svetik. "I'm happy to say we came out ready to play."After pitcher Zach Buck retired the side in order in the top of the first inning, the Bombers took the lead when Ian Silfies tripled down the right-field line and scored on Buck's single to center. The Lions (0-5) knotted the score in the second on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to center by Alex Lopez. In the home half of the second inning, Palmerton plated three runs on three hits with the big blow being a double to left-center by catcher Jared Mooney.Moravian scored in the third off a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a single by Marshell Hanyon. After Palmerton added their fifth run in the third, the Lions hung in the game by scoring on a throwing error to cut their deficit to 5-2 through three and a half innings."In our first year in this league we seem to compete, but then there comes an inning when the wheels fall off," said Moravian coach Chris Eckman. "Our inexperience in key spots shows. We're getting better, but we still have a lot of room for improvement.'The Bombers (1-2) increased their lead in the fourth to 7-3 with the help of two Lion infield miscues. The Lions committed six errors in the game. After a scoreless fifth, the Bombers tallied six runs in their half of the sixth to win by the mercy rule. Jon Schwartz ignited the rally with a lead-off single and a stolen base."Jon is our spark plug," said Svetik. "When he goes we go."Schwartz would later score on a sacrifice fly by Buck. Then, after Kole Rodrigues was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second, the Bombers scored five more times from an error, a walk, a long double over the left fielder's head by Nate DeKorte, and an RBI single from Curtis Kocis."I really hope this win gives us momentum going into our game on Friday against Southern Lehigh," said Svetik. "We got clutch hits today and Zach came through on the mound despite the really cold weather. We also got the middle of our order going."Through six innings, Buck allowed the Lions three runs on just four hits. He walked two and struck out five. At the plate, he drove in two runs to help his cause.Palmerton also got a huge contribution from their ninth hitter, second baseman Isaac George, who went 2-4 with two RBIs."I think we got some confidence today in what we can do when we put it all together," said Svetik. "We needed this. We got a great bunch of kids and I am looking forward to competing against the rest of our schedule."Mor.
