Man admits assaulting police officer

A Carbon County man admitted on Thursday in the county court to assaulting a police officer and was immediately sentenced to a county prison term.

Kevin Douglas Tansley Sr., 48, of Weissport, pleaded guilty to one count each of simple assault and harassment in two separate cases. Tansley was scheduled to go on trial on Monday on all pending charges.Tansley was charged for an incident on Sept. 23, 2012, in Palmerton. Officer Christopher T. Ritter responded to Lehigh Avenue for a report of a male causing a disturbance. On scene Ritter found Tansley apparently under the influence of alcohol, yelling obscenities. He refused to stop when told to by Ritter.Ritter then attempted to take him into custody and Tansley struggled with the officer. During the struggle Tansley kicked Ritter, causing injuries. The harassment plea stems from an incident on July 14, 2013, when a female arrived at the state police barracks in Towamensing Township to report she had been assaulted by Tansley while traveling in a vehicle with him in Lower Towamensing Township earlier. In a plea bargain a simple assault charge was dropped.Judge Joseph J. Matika told Tansley, "To assault a police officer is completely uncalled for." Matika said Ritter has been "very kind" to Tansley by agreeing to let the defendant plead to the simple assault charge with the more serious aggravated assault on a police officer count being dropped.Matika said with Tansley's prior record, the aggravated assault count would have put him in a state prison.Matika sentenced him to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in the county prison on the assault charge. On the harassment count he was fined $150.He was also ordered to pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole, and render 50 hours of community service when he is released on parole. He was given credit for 158 days already spent in jail on the charges.
