Troopers inspect car seats

Pennsylvania state troopers from Troop N were on hand last week to help parents learn about properly securing their child in a car seat.

The check went on as scheduled even though troopers were involved in a massive manhunt for Eric Frein, who is wanted for fatally shooting one state trooper and wounding a second a few days earlier.During a free car seat check, hosted by the state police and Blue Mountain Health System in the parking lot of Walmart in Lehighton, certified car seat technicians and troopers gathered to check car seats were properly installed in the vehicles, that they weren't expired or damaged, and that the child using the seat was secured safely.A total of 15 car seats were checked and three were replaced during the check, which was held in conjunction with National Child Passenger Safety Week.Mindy Graver, an organizer for the event, said the day was a success. She also commended the residents of Carbon County."I was very pleased to see the outpour of condolences that people gave to our checkers for the trooper that died," Graver said. "I think that says something about the local people and the respect they have for our troopers."The troopers urge all parents to make sure car seats are secured properly and that they follow the guidelines for children.Pennsylvania state law requires children under the age of 4 to ride in a federally approved car seat that is appropriate for the child's age, height and weight. Children between the ages of 4 and 8 must use a booster seat if they are no longer in a car seat. The state's seat belt law mandates that children ages 8 to 17 must use a seat belt, and violating this law is a primary offense. It is a secondary offense for drivers and front seat passengers age 18 and older to travel unbuckled.Because of the potential dangers associated with air bag deployment, children ages 12 and under should always ride in a vehicle's back seat.
