Middle school plans concert

Lehighton Area Middle School music department will be holding its 21st annual Spring Instrumental Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The jazz ensemble will perform Bill Holcombe's "Back Street Blues." Eighth graders Felicia-Sue Anthony and Dane Frantz will be featured on this selection. Next, the band will perform Van Morrison's "Domino" without a director. Eighth graders Piper DeMatte and Breanna Hoffner will duel on this selection.The jazz ensemble will conclude with Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline." The jazz ensemble invites the audience to sing along to their final number.The saxophone ensemble, consisting of Caine Carpenter, Piper DeMatte, Samantha Smalley, Traci Edmunds, Kira Kuehner and Dane Frantz, will perform "The Muppet Show Theme" and Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax."The Fifth and Sixth Grade Band will perform "Chorale and March," composed by Sandy Feldstein and John O'Reilly. The band will also perform "Aztec Sunrise" composed by John Edmondson.Aaron Bauer, Abigail Hoppes and Emma Schappell will perform a piece by the Baroque composer Vivaldi. After the trio, the concert band will perform an original by Larry Clark, titled, "Magma."The band will conclude its portion of the program with the classic 60s hit, "Wooly Bully."The band will also perform Carl Strommen's "Irish Song" which is reminiscent of the British wind band style. Then, the band will perform Randall Standridge's "Agressivo" which explores aggressive rhythmic and melodic patterns making use of fragmented forms and ostinato. "Clocks," by the band Coldplay, will be followed by "Siegfried's Super Sensational Circus March," which has all of the fun of a circus wrapped up in a two-minute montage of spirited melodies and wacky auxiliary percussion instruments, and will conclude the concert.The Lehighton AMVETS Post 106 will also present awards to the winners of a poster and essay contest.The concert is free and open to the public.
