Policeman's Ball benefits youth programs

With proceeds benefiting the youth of Jim Thorpe, the sixth annual Policeman's Charity Ball was held Saturday evening at the Mauch Chunk Ballroom in Jim Thorpe.

"The Jim Thorpe Police Department enjoys giving back to our community," said Chief Joseph Schatz, chairman of the charity ball."As always, giving back to the community is what this great event is all about," echoed co-chairwoman Jamie Solomon.Proceeds from the ball will help fund such Jim Thorpe youth programs as a fishing derby in May, an evening of safe Halloween activities, and Christmas in the Park.Schatz concluded his remarks for the evening by reciting the police department mission statement."The mission of the Jim Thorpe Police Department is to affirmatively promote, preserve, and deliver a feeling of security and safety to the community of Jim Thorpe," Schatz said."The Jim Thorpe Police Department promises to provide the highest quality of police services to protect life and property and to improve the quality of life in the borough of Jim Thorpe."The evening included hors d'oeuvres, a candlelight dinner, and dancing.Raffles were conducted with items donated by businesses and individuals from throughout the area.Music was provided by Lane Roberts, also known as "The Doc" from Penn's Peak Radio. In addition to community members, attendees to the sold-out event included politicians; police chiefs from neighboring communities; state troopers; and, of course, Jim Thorpe police officers.Gesturing to the police officers in attendance, Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko remarked, "I don't have to worry when I go to work in the morning and when I go to bed at night because I know that these guys are out there taking care of our town.""It was a great night for everyone especially for all the officers, government officials, and law enforcement workers," said Solomon."It's important for them to get away from their stressful jobs and have a fun night out."We're already looking forward to next year's event."For more information about the Jim Thorpe Police Department, visit
