All those who "quiero Taco Bell" will be muy feliz very happy to know the fast food restaurant just might be coming to Mahoning Township.

The Taco Bell corporation says plans are in place to open a new restaurant where a Long John Silver's stands now, at the Carbon Plaza along Blakeslee Boulevard Drive East in Mahoning Township.

Taco Bell spokeswoman Alexxis Cardenas said the restaurant is expected to replace the Long John Silver's by the end of the year.

But Dave Bhasin, of Multiconcept Group in Fogelsville, who owns the Long John Silver's franchise, says it's too soon to start planning a taco lunch.

"We're evaluating different options for how to improve business. We're still in the evaluation stage," he said in a telephone interview early Tuesday.

Bhasin said it will be at least a month before he has enough information to make a decision on how, when or even whether, to make any changes.

The possibility of a new restaurant was news to Mahoning Township Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt.

The owner has yet to approach supervisors, he said. "They have not been to the township at all," he said. "This is the first I've heard of it."

However, building code official Carl Faust said he spoke with the restaurant owner about a month ago and has seen preliminary plans, but they were not finalized or to scale.

"I have not seen final plans, and we have not received permit applications," he said.

Now, the closest Taco Bell to Lehighton is about 20 miles away on Route 209 in Brodheadsville.

Taco Bell, a subsidiary of Yum! brands, "is the nation's leading Mexican-inspired quick service restaurant" according to the company's website. It has more than 6,000 restaurants across the United States and serves more than 36 million customers each week.

Bhasin is also planning another Taco Bell for Saint Clair in Schuylkill County, near a development housing a Walmart and a Home Depot.
