Defendants enter pleas

Ten defendants in pending driving under the influence cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Thursday.

Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted the pleas from the following:Vernon Fritz, 36, of Andreas, was arrested on Sept. 1, 2013, along Mauch Chunk Street, by Mahoning Township police. Given a test, the result was 0.21 BAC. He was operating a motorcycle at the time.Serfass deferred sentencing so Fritz could apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program.Alyssa Marie Gruber, 23, of Coaldale, was arrested on Nov. 8, 2013, along Route 209 in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.Serfass sentenced her to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and render 25 hours of community service.She will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on June 27.Trevor Smoll, 46, of New Ringgold, was arrested on Dec. 6, 2013, along West Broadway in Jim Thorpe, where he was involved in accidents with parked cars. Police found his vehicle abandoned near the opera house where it had struck a parked car. He was later found hiding behind a vehicle.Serfass deferred sentencing so Smoll could apply for placement in the IPP.Stanley Barszcz, 51, of Kunkletown, was arrested on Nov. 19, 2013, along Route 209 in Franklin Township, by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result was 0.30 BAC.Serfass placed him on probation for six months and ordered he get a D&A evaluation, pay a fine of $300, and render 25 hours of community service.Denise Lynn Hugar, 40, of Lancaster, was arrested on March 28 along Canal Street in Franklin Township by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result was 0.14 BAC.Serfass placed her on probation for six months and ordered her get a D&A evaluation, pay a fine of $300, and render 25 hours of community service.Robert Merkel Jr., 53, of Lehighton, was arrested on Feb 1, along Forest Inn Road in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result was 0.25 BAC.Serfass sentenced him to serve 45 days to six months in jail, a fine of $750, one-year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.He began the jail term immediately and was granted work release privileges.Melvin Olmar Vega, 36, of Slatington, was arrested on Jan. 16 along Delaware Avenue by Palmerton police following a vehicle stop for speeding. Given a test, the result was 0.19 BAC.Serfass deferred sentencing so Vega could apply for the IPP.Matthew Rish, 46, of Freeland, was arrested on May 3, 2013, along Route 209 in Jim Thorpe by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result was 0.30 BAC.Serfass placed him on probation for six months and ordered he get a D&A evaluation, pay a fine of $300, and render 25 hours of community service.Rish also pleaded to three motor vehicle code violations and was ordered to pay a total of $60 in fines and costs.Paul R. Moon, 26, of Weatherly, was arrested on Feb. 26 along Route 248 in Palmerton by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.Serfass sentenced him to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on July 4.Tyler Recica, 24, of Lehighton, was arrested on Nov. 1, 2011, in the parking lot of the McDonald's Restaurant, along Blakeslee Boulevard, by Mahoning Township police. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.Serfass sentenced him to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on July 5.Each defendant must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
