Lehighton Band begins 150th season

The Lehighton Band will begin its 150th season of providing music to the Carbon County area with its first "Concert Under The Stars" in Eurana Park, Weatherly at 7 p.m. Sunday. The second concert will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19 in the Lehighton Park.

There is no rain date for Weatherly.In the event of inclement weather, the Lehighton concert will be held in the Boys and Girls Band Hall, Sixth and Cypress streets, Lehighton.The concert will feature Lora Krum, flutist, playing Chaminade's "Concerto."Also featured will be the entire trombone section as they play Frank Cofield's "Trombonanza."Beginning the concert will be an obscure march by John Philip Sousa, "The Corcoran Cadets," while his ever popular "Stars And Stripes Forever" will close the concert.In between these bookends will be a varied selection of tunes beginning with von Suppe's "Poet and Peasant Overture."The rest of the program will feature much lighter listening including "Great Themes From Great Italian Movies" "Big Bands Go Western," "New York: 1927" and the delightful "Pie In The Face Polka."In addition to the Sousa marches, the band will also be playing Karl King's "Mighty Minnesota March" and James Hosey's tribute to the men and women who fought in the Vietnam War; "Black Granite March."The concert will be conducted by Paul R. Smith with Bradly R. Cressley serving as announcer.A freewill offering will be accepted at the Lehighton concert for the general operating expenses of the band.The music for these concerts is also sponsored by businesses, professional people and music lovers from throughout the area.
